Backcountry New Zealand Hunts:

Backcountry New Zealand Hunts are professionally guided hunts aimed at people who are looking for a true hunting experience. Backcountry New Zealand Hunting has something to offer any discerning hunter, whether you are after a trophy or simply enjoy the satisfaction of hunting in the remote NZ backcountry. Let Backcountry NZ customize a hunt that meets your requirements. Hunting is available year round in New Zealand, although the best hunting season is March through August.

New Zealand is well known for it’s high standard of trophy animals especially species like Red Stag and Himalayan Tahr. The Red Stag is one of the most sought after trophies. The Red Stag “Rut / Roar” starts in March and ends late April. The Himalayan Bull Tahr rut is May through July, at this time of year the Tahr has a dark winter coat with a stunning mane similar to that of a Lion. May through July is also a great time for hunting the Alpine Chamois orginally introduced from Europe.

Our hunting experiences can be broken down into two distinct hunting experiences:
- High Peak Estate Trophy Experiences
- New Zealand Alpine Wilderness Hunts

High Peak Estate Trophy Hunt Experience:

Backcountry New Zealand guides have chosen to provide trophy hunts at High Peak Game Estate. High Peak is New Zealand’s leading premier Game Estate and the first to be accredited under the Game Estates accreditation process. The property boasts also being the largest estate in New Zealand and offers four and a half thousand acres of prime hunting land, with superb trophies ranging from representative to record class. Situated in the Canterbury High Country, the property is ideally suited to hunting with its attractive yet challenging terrain. Species on the property include, Red Stag, Fallow bucks, Wild Goat, Feral Sheep, and Wild Boar. Through successful management of game species the estate has been able to consistently produce record book trophies. Backcountry New Zealand believes that your experience at High Peak will provide a mix of quality species, superb terrain and excellent facilities... This style of hunt is suited to hunters who have limited time or who want a guranteed trophy animal, it is an exceptional experience.

Backcountry NZ Alpine Wilderness Hunts:

These hunts are free-range fair chase and suited to the “purest” hunter, they are almost always strenuous and usually take place in rugged terrain. Backcountry New Zealand Wilderness Hunts take you deep into the heart of New Zealand’s backcountry. Camping out in unique backcountry huts or tent camps with breathtaking vistas that look like something out of a Peter Jackson movie. Backcountry N.Z. Guides are picked for their hunting experience and ability to manage conditions in remote areas, and help you obtain a top trophy. The main target species for free-range fair chase is the Red Stag, Himalayan Tahr and Chamois. In order to be successful these hunts are between 9 and 8 days long, if you don’t have the luxury of time or you aren’t as fit as you used to be then we have options that utilise helicopters to access the hunting terrain.
